Stylist, blogger, and rape activist, Victoria Sanders aka Vic Styles, is on the verge of becoming one of social media’s newest and biggest fashion and lifestyle influencers. I have been following her for some time now and earlier this week I got the chance to speak to her. She is truly an inspiration and her story is something that can touch many and create a spark in so many people.
The D.C. native was a psychology major at the University of Alabama with a 3.4 GPA. She did not feel fulfilled. She always had an interest in fashion but like many, she followed the traditions that society told her to. She was unhappy with the way that she was living her life, listening and playing by the rules of others. She began to really think about pursuing what she truly loved, which was fashion. One day, she made a decision that would change her life completely. In the middle of the semester senior year, with only $500 to her name, Victoria decided to leave Alabama and by herself, she made her way to the city of Los Angeles.
What causes a person to make such a drastic decision like that? What pushed her to finally decide to get out of her comfort zone? In L.A Victoria had absolutely no family, no friends, and no job waiting for her. To many, a decision like that is insane. She chose to step out of her comfort zone with the confidence and faith that she would finally take charge of her life and make her dreams become reality. She never looked back, this woman is brave.
When she got to L.A she ended up finding a place to live with roommates that she did not know. She worked as a bartender to pay rent. Remember, she went to L.A to pursue a career in fashion, so she needed a way to break into the industry. Victoria became an intern for celebrity stylists, Taylor Jacobson. From 6am to 4pm she was an intern, and from 6pm to 3am she was a bartender. She was not getting paid as an intern. That’s quite a schedule, Victoria knew it wasn’t going to be easy but it was all worth it so she stuck to the plan and just kept working.
As she began to learn more and more, opportunities began to open up for her. She has worked with many notable celebrities such as Big Sean, Ariana Grande, Jeezy, Tia Mowry, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Jason Derulo, and the list goes on. She stresses how authentic you have to be when you are working with others. She believes that an individual should always try to come with his or her own ideas.
As an assistant and intern, Victoria was taking in so much information. She remembers what it was like to be at the very beginning and how much work it takes to continue. Now, 6 years later, she is an established wardrobe stylists and she uses her position to help others.
Victoria created an online styling course. The "Intro to Styling" course helped many gain the knowledge needed for the fashion industry. It gave them a head start which was very beneficial.
Victoria is one of the strongest and most ambitious people that I've ever met, and it was a pleasure getting the chance to meet to her. She made a decision to follow her own path, care free of what others had to say. She knew exactly what she wanted for herself, went out, and made it happen.
