“Music is a way to cope with certain emotions and celebrate other emotions.” - Sid Sriram

If you haven’t heard about Sid Sriram then you need to search that name asap! I’ve been following Sid for about 5 years now, and to this day with his passionate lyrics and unique vocal skills, he continues to grab the attention of many. Last week I got a chance to meet the man himself and he told me about his musical background, the inspiration for his lyrics,  and his new upcoming project, “Insomniac Season”.

The 25 year old singer, was born in South India. When he was a child the family moved to Fremont, California, not too far from the Bay Area. At a very young age Sid was exposed to a lot Indian classical music as well as western (American) music, mostly R&B. Growing up he really enjoyed listening to legends such as Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross. Both R&B and his background in Indian classical really had big influences on him.

Over the years, Sid has been trying to bring these influences together which has helped him to form his own sound that separates him from others. I remember when I first heard Sid Sriram singing, that voice was something that I’ve never heard before. It was amazing. The tone and the way he structured the words together in his songs was something that deserved recognition. He’s blessed to have musical influences from two completely different cultures. He's got the best of both worlds and while he was a student at The Berklee College of Music, he spent a lot of time perfecting his skill in bringing the two together.

Sid has written all of his songs. The one that stuck out to me the most was “2am Prayer”, which he wrote back in 2011. He opens with, “I hate to see my mother cry, so why did you have to let her sister die, why did you have to take her so suddenly and take her so far away”. These lyrics were inspired by an actual personal experience. He wrote “2am Prayer” right after the passing of his aunt and grandfather. Sid tries to write a song everyday so that it becomes second nature. It’s a way to truly hone his craft.

These days Sid has been under the radar. He's currently working on his newest project, "Insomniac Season". It's set to be released some time this summer. He’s spent a lot of time working with DJ Khalil and says that this 8-10 track project is the best music that he has ever created. The song "Moments of Weakness", which will be on Insomniac Season, was put out late last year. Its just a little taste of what to expect.
