"I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have to. It’s a responsibility that you carry being an artist." - Raelis Vásquez

The Selfless Artist...

I really enjoyed speaking to artist, Raelis Vásquez (IG: @raelis). I think it's dope that he uses his talent to help and educate others which is why I believe he will contiuosly grow and evolve as an artist. He puts in a lot of hours and is constantly looking to push himself.

"I’m always doing research, learning new things, and being interested in more and deeper concepts. Right now I’m really focused on being a voice for my community, that being the latino, black, and the immigrant community of the african diaspora. Dedicated isn't even the right word, I’m all in, I feel like I have a unique voice that I can use to bring awareness to start the conversation with this platform which is painting." - Raelis Vásquez

An extremely passionate artist, he loves what he does, and emphasizes the importance of having a message.

"I make my work based on an idea that I have or a concept that I want to start a conversation about. It's all from the research I'm doing. I don't have a work-life balance, it's all work or it's all life. I don't separate the two and I don't think there's a need to, especially if you love what you're doing or if you have a purpose. I feel like I definitely have something to do." - Raelis Vásquez

Constantly pushing himself....

"I’m still learning a lot because its a whole different medium. It’s a new thing, sculpting figures, thats a new thing for me." - Raelis Vásquez

The Responsibility...

"I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have to. It’s a responsibility that you carry being an artist...Well I think...I don't know if most artists think that way but I think there is a responsibility there especially being an immigrant from the Dominican Republic and seeing the fact that I could easily be in El Campo or one of my cousins that are in the hood." - Raelis Vásquez

Raelis is a senior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), which happens to be one of the top schools in the United States. He explained to me how privaledged and thankful he feels for how his life worked out. What I got from Raelis is that painting isn't just a hobby of his, he litterally paints for his life. When it comes to somebody with a mentality like that, the sky is the limit. He's passionate.
